Barnes & Noble: New Release: Centennial Book by Nadia RUSS "Fort Lauderdale 100"

A New book "Fort Lauderdale 100: A Must-Have Collector's Edition" by Nadia RUSS is now available from Barnes & Noble book store with the new release's discount -- 30% OFF! Click HERE to go to the Barnes&Noble store website.

Read fragment from the book's Introduction by Nadia RUSS:

"Fort Lauderdale is an amazing city. I discovered Fort Lauderdale for myself in the late 90s, when I came on a cruise ship from the Bahamas. When I arrived on this land for the first time, the only word I could find was “WOW!” And now, more than ten years later, I still have this “WOW!” every time I see A1A, or Las Olas, or Sea Breeze Boulevard. During my first visit, I couldn’t imagine that one day I would live in Fort Lauderdale; it seemed unreal. But it’s mesmerizing, powerful beauty attracts me again and again.

And now, New York City and Fort Lauderdale have almost equal places in my heart. Someone said that “people can get used to everything.” It is not true, I cannot get used to the uniqueness and beauty I see in Fort Lauderdale: the amazing tropical plants, fascinating and polished A1A beach with its Atlantic Ocean, glamorous Las Olas Boulevard with its Isles, bridges and big yachts and homes at every corner, and small shops and restaurants that give you the feeling of comfort as if you were at home.

This year, the city celebrates its 100 year anniversary. In January, I decided to make a book, dedicated to it, and include in this book 100 photographs of Fort Lauderdale. The photographs you will see here are made on Las Olas Boulevard, A1A, Sea Breeze Boulevard, Riverwalk, and more.

I made hundreds of photographs because the same panoramas I saw daily were different each time, and I wanted to capture all this changing beauty. The color of the ocean and canal surfaces changed daily and hourly depending on the sun, sky and wind. Sunsets are different daily, with the reflection on the water and buildings, windows. There’re also perfect pieces of beauty created by human hands -- yachts and houses..."

This is the first book, published by NeoPopRealism PRESS, which was established in 2011.

Visual Arts & Ethics

Until they breaches force issues into the public eye, the questions of ethics in the art world receive a little attention. Writers about art have suffered from the fashion called “appropriation”  and it has encouraged the plagiarism. Often, museums exploit curators as writers for hire, and were among the most important arbitrators of culture in the 20th century. Museums continue to play an important role in the 21st century, they are the repositories and transmitters of the national values and ideals. Museums have tremendous power and authority in our society, the museums’ artifacts shape the broader culture and the history. Each museum is constantly called upon to make choices, measure its values and take actions.
As a transformative and force, the role of art will only be realized if art liberates itself from the pressure that corporate constraints have on determining its future.
Artists should ignore economic opportunities to further their ability to work. If art will continue to function without a clear cultural agenda but according to the agenda of economic globalization,  it will lose its significance. Art expert certifying authenticity, or museum exhibition sponsor shouldn’t be in a position to benefit financially from the decision that they are in a position to make.
Private ownership of the cultural means of production and the sell for profit has become normal practice. The cultural services and goods are not unique outputs of historical creative talent and genius in America.  The only exceptions were publicly supported libraries and museums.
Over the past year, museums have increasingly joined the ranks of the market. And as a result, the concept of no market controlled work of art or institution is almost extinct.
Parallel with private appropriation of symbolic activity has been the rationalization of artistic production. The distribution capabilities have increased immeasurably the profitability of cultural production.
The New Tate Modern in London, Guggenheim Museum, DIA’s opened Beacon facility in New York offer prominent examples of new trend. Their attention is directed to the undeniable impressiveness of the new technologies of message making.
The ethical criteria reflects a society whose social values and norms are in motion, and whose institutions such as universities and museums conform to market pressure.
In 20th century, mission of museum as an institution in the U.S. was predictable. It included the collecting, preserving, and protecting what it contained. Today, this concept has changed. In the U.S., the museums  first  supported by wealthy patrons and by private endowments. They have served as a reminder and celebrant of the established order. For hundred years, aristocracy and church provided the economic foundation for culture, they brokered and controlled culture. The transformation of the U.S.  museums into public relations agents for the interests of big business and its ideological allies slowly evolved in the 20th century.
Corporate supporters are bedrock to nonprofit organizations. They can afford to give away vast of money for exhibitions that they find relevant. Unfortunately, often, philanthropy is a smart form of advertising and philanthropists want to see exhibitions that attract viewers and support social tastes that are not controversial or difficult to comprehend. Many ethical issues confronting art people and art organizations today because works of art have gained commodity status.

Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum: Chaos and Classicism October Programs

A full roster of programs is being presented in the Sackler Center for Arts Education during the run of Chaos and Classicism: Art in France, Italy, and Germany, 1918–1936 (on view through January 9, 2011) at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. October highlights include the following.
Lecture: Lateness and the Politics of Media - Tuesday, October 12, 6:30 pm. Peter Eisenman, Principal, Eisenman Architects.. Charles Gwathmey Professor in Practice, Yale School of Architecture. The celebrated architect, theorist, and author of Giuseppe Terragni: Transformations, Decompositions, Critiques (2003) posits that we are in a late moment in history in which design is controlled by the media to promote consumption. Where does that leave architecture, which, he argues, is the antithesis of design? For tickets, visit
http://guggenheim.org/
Film Screening: Scipio the African (Scipione l'africano), 1937. Director: Carmine Gallone. Fridays, October 8 and 15, 12:30, 2, and 3:30 pm. Fascist Italy's most spectacular costume epic celebrates ancient Rome's conquests in Africa during the Second Punic War. Produced by Benito Mussolini's government, at the time this was the most expensive Italian film ever made with over 430,000 extras, 1,000 horses, and 50 elephants. Drawing on Rome's imperial past to justify Italy's expansionist present, the film is a soaring historical pageant, reverberating with the aesthetics and ideals of fascist Italy. Free with museum admission.
Film Screening: The Blood of a Poet (Le sang d'un poète), 1930. Director: Jean Cocteau
Saturday, October 9, 6:30 pm; Sunday, October 10, 4:30 pm; Friday, October 29, 1 and 2:30 pm.

The first installment in the Orphic Trilogy—a series of three films by acclaimed French avant-garde director Jean Cocteau—the groundbreaking film The Blood of a Poet is one of cinema's great experiments. A portrait of the plight of the artist, the film uses surrealist imagery to explore the poet's obsession with the relationships between art and dreams, metaphor and reality, and life and death. French with English subtitles. Free with museum admission.
Access Tour: Mind's Eye. Monday, October 11, 6:30 pm. As part of the museum's free programs for partially sighted, blind, and deaf visitors, Guggenheim museum educators guide an interactive tour and discussion focusing on Chaos and Classicism and followed by a private reception. Free admission with advance RSVP.
On View: Vox Populi: Posters of the Interwar Years. The 1920s and 1930s were among the greatest years in the history of poster design. The popular voice of manufacturers, political movements, and the travel and entertainment industries, the poster was an immensely refined art created for a vast public. Vox Populi: Posters of the Interwar Years presents a selection of six posters from France, Italy, and Germany. The complete information on education programs available at

SeaHawk: Connecting Past, Present and Future

SeaHawk Wang-Radojčić was born in Harbin, China. Grew up during Mao's revolution, she graduated from The Northeastern University of Art. She didn’t want to be the art editor for the Hei Longjiang Daily newspaper in Harbin and declined this offer. She devoted herself exclusively to painting.
By Ming magazine in 1997, SeaHawk and nine other fine artists were deemed of China's ten best artists and the national art treasure. She was exhibiting her artwork in different venues including The National Museum of China, where she had two very successful exhibitions - "Hong Kong Returns" (1997) and another - "Chinese Green Revolution" (1999). SeaHawk was continuing her study, but this time it was Chinese traditional philosophy...
Years later happened that her  dreams came through - she got married a man she really loves, and she moved from China to the United States and currently lives in New York, city she admires and idolizes. She continues to paint and teach, inspired by democracy and opportunities of the United States.
New country, new culture, new life. In present time she is working on several projects, such as her solo exhibition in Las Vegas (October-December, 2010), Harlem Art Walk solo and collective exhibition (October, 2010), Columbia University sponsored 3 month solo exhibition (May-July, 2011).
In September-October 2010, the NeoPopRealism Online Magazine features Seahawk’s artwork she was exhibiting in The National Museum of China: "Whirlpool Of Greed," "Between Good And Evil," "Shooting Into the Future," and "Where Are Our Homes." Creative, positive and energetic, today SeaHawk produces her new art works,
negotiates her career transitions, establishing the long- and short-term goals for achieving new success in the totally new world, in international center of arts and culture - New York City.

Urban Images: Re-imagining the City Through Moving Images

The Urban Images symposium brings together an internationally renowned group of artists and scholars for a two-day program in order to discuss the field of artistic film and video related to architecture and urban space. The objective of the symposium is to expand theoretical concepts and artistic tools for understanding the inherent qualities of moving images and its relationship to urban culture. The program touches upon moving images’ influence on urban architecture, urban architecture’s relationship to avant-garde film, the city as a source for artistic film and video, and reflections on urban architecture in recent film and video art.
Considering the globally expanding urban developments and the increasingly fluid borders between research in architecture and moving images, this symposium presents important cross-disciplinary inquiries in the fields of architecture and visual practice. Bearing in mind Gilles Deleuze’s sensitivity to the ways in which contemporary culture is becoming fundamentally an audiovisual culture, the symposium will outline ontological and psychological relationships to moving images in the context of urban environment.
The following people will present their most recent research in this field: Parveen Adams, Giuliana Bruno, Bull.Miletic, Andreas Bunte, Beatriz Colomina, Mark Cousins, Edward Dimendberg, Tom Gunning, Henrik Gustafsson, Marit Paasche and Judy Radul.
The papers and artistic presentations from the symposium will be published in a book scheduled for release in early 2011.
Registration deadline: Friday September 3, 2010. Registration fee: NOK 400 (students NOK 200).
Questions regarding the symposium can be directed to: Synne Bull
and Marit Paasche.
The Urban Images symposium is organized by the Oslo Academy of Fine Art in collaboration with Atelier Nord. Generous support is granted by The Freedom of Expression Foundation, Public Art Norway (KORO), Oslo Municipality, Embassy of the United States in Oslo, and German Embassy in Oslo.
