Urban Images: Re-imagining the City Through Moving Images
The
Urban Images symposium brings together an internationally renowned group of artists and scholars for a two-day program in
order to discuss the field of artistic film and video related to architecture and urban space. The objective of the symposium
is to expand theoretical concepts and artistic tools for understanding the inherent qualities of moving images and its relationship
to urban culture. The program touches upon moving images’ influence on urban architecture, urban architecture’s
relationship to avant-garde film, the city as a source for artistic film and video, and reflections on urban architecture
in recent film and video art. Considering the globally expanding urban developments and the increasingly fluid borders between research in architecture
and moving images, this symposium presents important cross-disciplinary inquiries in the fields of architecture and visual
practice. Bearing in mind Gilles Deleuze’s sensitivity to the ways in which contemporary
culture is becoming fundamentally an audiovisual culture, the symposium will outline ontological and psychological relationships
to moving images in the context of urban environment. The following people will present their most recent research in
this field: Parveen Adams, Giuliana Bruno, Bull.Miletic, Andreas Bunte, Beatriz Colomina, Mark Cousins, Edward Dimendberg, Tom Gunning, Henrik Gustafsson,
Marit Paasche and Judy Radul. The papers and artistic presentations from the symposium
will be published in a book scheduled for release in early 2011. Registration
deadline: Friday September 3, 2010. Registration fee: NOK 400 (students NOK 200). Questions regarding the symposium
can be directed to: Synne Bull and Marit Paasche. The Urban Images symposium is organized by the Oslo Academy of
Fine Art in collaboration with Atelier Nord. Generous support is granted by The Freedom of Expression Foundation, Public Art Norway (KORO), Oslo Municipality, Embassy of the
United States in Oslo, and German Embassy in Oslo.

DARE # 5: maHKU Platform, Utrecht, The Netherlands
maHKU Platform The Utrecht Graduate School of Visual Art and Design (maHKU)
presents 3 Graduate Exhibitions, 1 Open Studio and 3 Research Screenings.
Opening, August 27 Academiegalerie
and Aorta: 17-19. Expodium: 18-20.
maHKU Degree Show MA Fine Art: Collective Individualism
This presentation is based on a situated and committed take on the chances and challenges of temporal and immaterial
works of art outside the white cube. The focus and the starting point of the actions is the
Jaarbeursplein: the square located behind the Hoog Catharijne shopping mall. The vast and varied activities by the students
there are then connected with works articulated as interventions and documentations at the Expodium space.
Curator:
Mika Hannula (Professor of Artistic Research, Gothenburg University) in collaboration with Expodium, Platform for Young Art.
Location: Expodium, Krugerstraat 11, Monday-Friday 10-17. Sunday 9.12: 12-17.
maHKU Fine Art: Open Studio:
August 28 and 29. 11-17. A presentation of the studio-based research projects by the Ma Fine
Art students. Location: SWK, Van Asch van Wijckkade 28-30, Utrecht.
maHKU Degree Show Spatial Design:
Subtle Revolutions Despite the fact that the Spatial Design students originate from eight different countries
their presentation shows a striking unanimity in the involved, process-oriented, approach of the design discipline. The projects
demonstrate that process-oriented research leads to transformations in the relationship between public and private spheres.
Such research aims to stimulate new ways of thinking and new strategies to generate discussion in the field. In line with
Doing Dissemination, students also investigate whether the current openness and diversity in communication leads
to more quality, attention and dissemination.
Curator: Arjen Oosterman (Editor in Chief, Volume
Magazine) Location: Aorta, Achter de Dom 14. Wednesday-Saturday: 12-17 (and Sunday 9.12).
maHKU Degree
Show Communication Design: No Title “Here I was surrounded by fashion and editorial and my so-called mates and I’ve never felt so inspired. Never
in all my puff. Since I was on remand, they’ve had me on this program, this state sponsored addiction. Three sickly
sweet doses of workshops a day instead of lectures. But it is never enough. I need to visit the maHKU Platform for one hit.
One final hit to get us over this long, hard year.” (After Trainspotting)
Location: Academiegalerie,
Minrebroederstraat 16, Wednesday-Saturday: 12-17.
maHKU Research Screenings Communication Design: Academiegalerie.
Critical Referent: Joke Robaard. September 2, 14-16.
Spatial Design: Aorta.
Critical Referent: ZUS (Zones Urbaines Sensibles), September 2, 19-21.
Fine Art: Expodium. Critical Referents:
Pilvi Takala and Joshua Thies. September 3, 14-16.30.
DARE Twice a year, under
the title DARE (Dutch Artistic Research Event), maHKU organizes a public event: an international artistic research
symposium in spring and a presentation of current maHKU research in September (maHKU-Platform).
On April
1 a symposium was held, entitled Doing Dissemination, dealing with the problems surrounding dissemination of artistic
research. The keynote presentation was held by Nicolas Bourriaud. Other contributions were by, among others, Geert Lovink, Jurgen Bey and BikvanderPol. A report
about this symposium will appear in maHKUzine 9, Journal of Artistic Research.
DARE is a project initiated
by the Utrecht Graduate School of Visual Art and Design (maHKU). DARE # 5 is also made possible with the support of Dutch
Design Double.
maHKU Since 2004 the Utrecht Graduate School of Visual Art and Design (maHKU)* has been the
sole master program in the Netherlands to offer one-year, interdisciplinary graduation courses in research. Through an intensive
seminar program with artists, designers, architects, curators, and theorists, two main research themes are addressed. Departing
from the question of intermediality, the department of Fine Art focuses on the position of the artistic image in
a culture of visual information, whereas the department of Design focuses on topical forms of engagement from a transdisciplinary
attitude. These research trajectories are developed and realized in close collaboration with local and global partners.
*Note: maHKU application and Admission for MA Fine Art and MA Design (Editorial Design, Fashion Design, Interior Design, Public Space Design) 2011-2012 are possible from September
2010 – April 2011.

museum, the restoration of the historic building is nearly complete. From August 28, 2010 until January 8, 2011, the Stedelijk
will temporarily re-open its doors with The Temporary Stedelijk at the Stedelijk Museum.

to artistic, theoretical and media production in the Netherlands and abroad. The program consists of theory seminars and talks,
performances, film screenings, Q&A with artists and designers, workshops, interactive

arts and art history, important themes for the Stedelijk at this moment in its history. The Theory Talks serve as
a hub to make theory accessible to a wide community in the Netherlands and abroad. The goal is to use and to address theory
in a productive way. At The Temporary Stedelijk, theory talks! With (a.o.): Sarah Cook, Ann Demeester, Ann Goldstein, Suman Gupta, Marina Grzinic, Tim Griffin, Keith Moxey,

work or that produced by other artists or filmmakers. The screenings are accompanied by a Q&A with the artist and are
hosted by a curator of the Stedelijk Museum.
With (a.o.): Jurgen Bey and Hala Elkoussy
Symposia In order to further explore the Stedelijk Museum as a future platform for a variety of discursive
events, that provide exhaustive, in-depth yet accessible reflections on urgent developments in the contemporary

fraud - DON'T
LET THEM TRICK YOU
Periodically, the different, not related to visual arts Web sites offer for sell the
artworks and mention that they are painted by "RUSS" in "NeoPopRealism" manner. For example, one on
the left. Do not let them fool you. This artwork was made not by the NeoPopRealism creator Nadia Russ. If you have the doubts purchasing NeoPopRealist artworks by Nadia Russ, you are welcome
to send us a photo of the work and we will mail you a certificate which will state that this artwork was made (if it
was made by Nadia Russ) by Nadia Russ. Please assume, that contemporary artists could create their artworks
in any manner, including NeoPopRealism. But if they sign these works "Nadia Russ", it will be a fraud. Regularly
- after she adopted this pseudonim (late 90s) - Nadia Russ signing her works on the front of artworks and always on
the back, if it is canvas, this way ("Queen of Magic " was an exception):
